Kory Putney, 46, was found guilty following a three-day trial in Harford County Circuit Court of attempting to gun down his friend of 20 years, who was able to identify him after surviving the shooting.
According to the Harford County State's Attorney's Office, members of the sheriff's office were called to investigate a shooting late on Aug. 21, 2022, where they found a gunshot victim in a grassy area between 220 Mayberry Drive and 230 Mayberry Drive in Aberdeen.
Court documents state that the victim suffered multiple gunshot wounds to his arms, legs, and hands, and was later to identify Putney as the shooter.
Investigators determined that the victim was seen on surveillance video leaving an apartment on Mayberry Drive and then followed by a man in a hoodie who exited from the same apartment with a handgun in his hand.
The second man was later identified as Putney, who followed his victim before the shooting.
During the investigation, prosecutors say that the victim was able to identify the person who shot him, and confirmed that he and Putney had known each other for more than 20 years.
Putney was convicted of:
- Attempted second-degree murder;
- First- and second-degree assault;
- Use of a firearm in the commission of a violent crime;
- Illegal possession of a firearm by a prohibited person;
- Illegal possession of ammunition by a prohibited person.
Sentencing has been scheduled for Jan. 15, 2025.
"Numerous challenges were presented in this case, but with thorough case preparation and the strong working relationships of our law enforcement partners, we were able to ensure that justice was served today," State's Attorney Alison Healey stated.
"We look forward to January, when, yet another violent criminal will be removed from the streets of Harford County for decades to come."
